Chelsea Green nearly became a completely different WWE superstar. It wasn’t just something fans wanted: Triple H wanted it too.
Speaking to Complex Graps, Green revealed that she and WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H sat down about a year ago and seriously discussed taking her away from the comedy character that had made her one of WWE’s most entertaining acts.
“Actually, yes, it did. About a year ago, I had a conversation with Hunter. We sat down and we talked about me going in a more serious direction.”
The timing couldn’t have been worse. According to Green, the very next week WWE dropped her straight back into another short comedy segment, where she was quickly pinned—making it pretty obvious the creative shift wasn’t happening after all.
“Literally the next week I was put in a comedy spot that lasted like 30 seconds and I was pinned. I’m like, ‘Well, I fear we’re here to stay.’ And we never—him and I—never spoke about it again.”
Green laughed while remembering how seriously they had taken the conversation, even discussing changing almost every part of her presentation.
“It’s such a funny conversation to think about because we were like, ‘Yeah… and, you know, I’ll stop doing this and I’ll stop doing that, and I’ll be more serious, and I’ll look more serious, and I’ll do my moves.'”
Instead… Nothing changed: “And then I literally believe I went and then took the Jamie…” Looking back now, Green says she’s glad things played out the way they did. Rather than chasing a different version of herself, she realized she’d already found exactly what worked.
“So, you know, I feel like I found my niche. I found my lane. And like, why did I try to get out of the lane? The lane works. It’s my lane. I made the lane. I’m going to stay in the lane.”
Green also believes that’s why fans gradually stopped booing her and started cheering instead, despite WWE never officially turning her babyface.
“I invite others to come in and try it. But at the end of the day, I know that what I do, I do it better than anyone else. And that’s why it works. And that’s why people believe it. And that’s why they turned me babyface naturally because everyone was like, ‘Wait, this is so stupid. We like it. She’s so annoying. We like it.'”
In the end, the character change never happened. Instead, Chelsea doubled down on the over-the-top personality that made her one of WWE’s most entertaining performers, and judging by the crowd reactions she’s getting today, it’s hard to argue with the result.
