Candice LeRae might be out of the TV spotlight, but she’s still finding a way to stay in the WWE mix—only now, she’s stepping into a very different role behind the scenes. The longtime WWE veteran is now producing matches, and she even worked on a WWE Main Event bout featuring The Street Profits vs. Los Garza. But not everyone’s buying the idea that she earned the spot on her own.
During the latest Writing with Russo, former WWE writer Vince Russo didn’t hold back his criticism, suggesting LeRae’s new job had more to do with her marriage to Johnny Gargano than with actual qualifications. Once the topic came up, Russo fired off instantly:
“That obviously doesn’t reek of freaking good old boy network. Shawn Michaels loves Johnny Gargano. Johnny Gargano is married to Candice LeRae. Like, give me a freaking break.”
The criticism didn’t stop there. When Russo heard that the match involved The Street Profits and Los Garza—a team made up of second-generation wrestlers Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo—he scoffed at the idea of them being produced by LeRae.
“You’ve got second-generation wrestlers in there that have a clue to what they’ve been doing. The Street Profits have been doing this for a while, and they’re taking direction from a literally 105-pound woman. Is that what you’re telling me?”
Russo emphasized his point again when reminded of the legacy backgrounds of Garza and Carrillo.
“You got wrestlers in there that wrestling is in their blood and their fathers and their grandfathers before them. And Candice LeRae is going to teach them why?”
He flat-out said the only reason she’s got this backstage role is because of who she’s married to.
“It’s the good old boy network, bro. And that’s why it freaking sucks. It makes me wonder like, what the heck is the criteria to be an agent in the WWE?”
When his co-host suggested the selection process might not be based on merit at all, Russo chimed in again:
“Who knows, bro? Seriously—who knows, man. You gotta know somebody, that’s what it is.”
Russo closed out his rant by pointing out that there are more qualified women out there, and dropped one major name WWE could’ve picked instead.
“I know that Candice has been around for a while in her wrestling career, but if I’m thinking of a female producer—and I’ve said this many, many times—the first person I think of is Natalya.”
The update comes at a time when LeRae has stepped away from the ring, with her last televised match airing back in September. Whether she’s producing as a temporary trial or for the long haul remains to be seen—but it’s clear people are already debating whether she’s the right fit behind the curtain.
