Brian Cage’s AEW comeback was a lot rougher than fans may have realized. “The Machine” was already dealing with a torn quad, but his recovery got even more brutal after he found out he needed a third surgery.

Cage spoke with Diario Kayfabe and False Finish HQ about his long road back to the ring. He explained that while he was already sidelined for months, he decided to also get his right knee fixed, only to have the process become much harder than expected.

“Definitely finding out I was going to have a third surgery after deciding to get my right knee fixed while I was already out for months with a torn quad. That made the day-to-day difficult and rehab absolutely terrible.”

The goal was to knock out multiple problems at once and return to AEW feeling fully healthy. Instead, Cage ended up extending an already miserable recovery and putting himself through another round of rehab.

“I was trying to save time so I could come back feeling great and avoid ever having to go through surgery again.”

That extra surgery hit him hard, but Cage said it also gave him even more motivation to push through. He did not want the injury stretch to define the rest of his career.

“That’s exactly what ended up happening. It was devastating, but it also lit an even bigger fire under me.”

Cage had been away from AEW programming for an extended stretch while dealing with the injuries. For someone known for his freakish strength, explosive movement, and ridiculous physique, being stuck in recovery was a major shift.

Still, Cage did not treat the surgeries like the end of the road. He saw them as a brutal reset, and now he is trying to make sure the time away was worth it.
