Brian Cage’s AEW return was not exactly a smooth ride back to television. After more than a year away and three surgeries, “The Machine” says he got the call late at night and barely had time to breathe before heading straight into action.
Cage spoke with Diario Kayfabe and False Finish HQ about how his AEW return came together. He said the company contacted him late on a Tuesday night, even though he already had a packed schedule and was not even home.
“When I got the call to come back to AEW, it was late Tuesday night. I already had a full schedule and wasn’t even home.”
Instead of easing back in, Cage had to scramble. He got home, trained legs, handled his commitments, and kept moving even though he had a travel day ahead of him.
“I got back, trained legs because I knew I’d be traveling all day Wednesday for Dynamite, prepared everything for the weekend and my commitments, and finished around three in the morning.”
That left him with almost no sleep before he had to get moving again. Cage said he was up before 6 a.m. to catch his flight, then did not arrive at the arena until that night.
“I got up at 5:40 a.m. to get to the airport and didn’t arrive at the arena for the match with Kevin Knight until around seven that night.”
Once Cage got to the building, things did not slow down. He said he went straight to medical, had to get cleared by the state athletic commission, received treatment, and did not even get to settle into the locker room.
“I went straight to medical, had to get cleared by the state athletic commission, then receive treatment. I didn’t even see the locker room.”
By the time all of that was done, Cage was basically thrown right into show mode. There was no long warm-up, no easy reset, and no calm moment before walking back into AEW action.
“I changed right after getting off the treatment table and went straight to Gorilla Position.”
That is a wild way to return after such a long injury layoff. Cage had been away after dealing with a torn quad and multiple surgeries, but his comeback night turned into a race from travel to medical clearance to the curtain.
Brian Cage made it back to AEW, but it was far from a simple return. After a brutal recovery, the comeback itself was another test, and Cage still got through it without making excuses.
