Abner Uribe turned a regular strikeout into a straight-up Attitude Era moment Tuesday night after hitting multiple DX-style crotch chops toward the St. Louis Cardinals dugout during the Milwaukee Brewers’ 6-0 victory.
Uribe struck out Alec Burleson looking to end the eighth inning with runners on base, then immediately stared toward the Cardinals and fired off three exaggerated crotch chops that looked ripped straight from D-Generation X.
The timing made things even crazier because St. Louis was still challenging the called third strike while Uribe was already celebrating on the mound. Replay eventually upheld the call after the pitch barely caught the bottom edge of the strike zone. While the moment instantly got wrestling fans talking online, Brewers manager Pat Murphy looked completely fed up afterward and didn’t try to soften his reaction.
“I don’t know what got over him. I mean, he’s been an emotional guy, but that kind of thing, that’s just not how we do things. I was embarrassed by it. Why are we doing it? It’s a 6-0 game. What are we doing there?”
Murphy also admitted he immediately addressed the situation with Uribe after the game and made it clear the celebration crossed a line.
“I love the kid. Believe me, I love the kid. There’s so much good in this kid. He’s been so great for us in so many ways, but that’s unacceptable. So, whatever’s going on, you can’t tolerate that.”
The Brewers manager then pointed out how badly the situation could have backfired if the strikeout challenge had gone the other way.
“The thing that I think about is if that challenge got overturned, you’ve got to reset and go back out there and pitch. This is Major League Baseball. Guys can reset, boom, base hit, dumper, homer, and all of a sudden it’s 6-5.”
Uribe later apologized through an interpreter, owning up to the WWE-style antics while also hinting there was bad blood brewing between both dugouts before the inning even happened.
“Everyone here knows me and knows who I am, and knows I have a bit of a history of being emotional out there. I think first I owe an apology to the Brewers. I owe an apology to my teammates, to my manager, all the bosses of the team. I understand that’s unacceptable, to go out there and react in a way like that.”
At the same time, Uribe accused Oliver Marmol of making gestures toward Milwaukee’s dugout that he interpreted as threats toward Brewers hitters.
“But at the same time, I don’t think it’s unprofessional for their manager to be making signs towards our dugout saying that he’s going to be hitting guys. There was an event that occurred during the practice today, too, and I don’t think that was right. So, I have my teammates’ back always.”
Marmol declined to comment after the game, leaving the bizarre baseball-meets-wrestling moment hanging in the air. Between bat flips, staredowns, and now full DX crotch chops on the mound, MLB celebrations are starting to look more like Monday Night Raw by the week. The only thing missing Tuesday night was Triple H’s entrance music blasting through the stadium speakers.
