Bret Hart didn’t waste any time killing the superstar treatment when he arrived in WCW.
Perry Saturn revealed that WCW gave Hart his own private locker room after signing him away from WWE, but The Hitman immediately rejected it. Saturn said Hart saw the setup, ripped the sign down and went straight to Eric Bischoff to make sure it didn’t happen again.
The story came up while Saturn was discussing how Hulk Hogan had his own locker room in WCW. Saturn said that kind of separation wasn’t normal in wrestling at the time and created distance between Hogan and the rest of the roster. According to Saturn, WCW tried giving Bret Hart the same treatment when he came into the company. Hart wasn’t interested. Saturn told Hart where he could find Eric Bischoff, and Hart went directly to him. It apparently didn’t take long to get the situation handled.
“I just met Bret Hart that day, and I could tell without even really knowing him he was f*cking outraged. He ripped the f*cking sign off the thing and goes, ‘Where can I find Eric?’”
“He came walking by and I go, ‘You all right?’ He goes, ‘Yeah, that’ll never happen again.’”
Saturn said the reaction earned his respect because Hart could have easily accepted the perk. He had just arrived in WCW as one of the biggest stars in wrestling and was coming off a run as WWE Champion. Instead, Hart immediately made it clear that he wasn’t going to separate himself from the rest of the locker room.
Saturn later admitted that he might have accepted a private locker room himself if WCW offered him one, but Bret Hart clearly wanted nothing to do with it when he walked through the door.
