Bill Dundee has passed away at the age of 82. The wrestling legend’s death was announced on September 6 by his son, Jamie Dundee, bringing heartbreaking news to the wrestling world after a career that stretched across more than five decades.
Book Pro Wrestlers shared the news on X and stated that Jamie announced his father passed away at 3:30 Sunday morning.
“Heartbreaking news this morning: ‘Superstar’ Bill Dundee has passed away. His son, Jamie Dundee, shared the devastating news just minutes ago, announcing that his father passed away at 3:30 this morning. He was 82 years old.”
Conrad Thompson also reacted to Dundee’s passing and remembered him as both a great performer and wrestling mind.
“I am sad to report that Bill Dundee passed away this morning. He was a brilliant wrestling mind and performer for decades. My thoughts and prayers are with his entire family.”
Dundee was born in Scotland before being raised in Australia, where he began his professional wrestling career in 1962. He eventually made his way to the United States in 1974 and became “Superstar” Bill Dundee, a name that would become closely tied to Memphis wrestling for decades.
Memphis is where Dundee became a legitimate territory star. He spent the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s as one of the region’s most important performers, with his long-running relationship with Jerry “The King” Lawler producing both major tag team partnerships and heated rivalries. Dundee captured the Southern Heavyweight Championship numerous times and remained one of the names fans closely associated with the glory years of Memphis wrestling.
Dundee and Lawler also took their partnership beyond Memphis. The two captured the AWA World Tag Team Championship twice in 1987, adding another major accomplishment to Dundee’s lengthy championship résumé. He also worked for promotions around the country and spent time as both a wrestler and booker during his career.
National television audiences may also remember Dundee from his run in WCW during the 1990s. He appeared as “Sir William,” serving as the top hat-wearing manager of Steven Regal before leaving the company in 1994.
Even as he got older, Dundee continued stepping into the ring. He wrestled well into his 70s before retiring from in-ring competition in 2019, an incredible run for someone who had started wrestling nearly six decades earlier.
Dundee’s impact in Memphis was eventually recognized with induction into the Memphis Wrestling Hall of Fame. His résumé included championships across the AWA, CWA, NWA and USWA, but his legacy went far beyond belts. He was one of the performers who helped define an entire era of Memphis wrestling.
