Big E’s WWE Title reign was supposed to have a much different ending, and honestly, the original plan sounds way cleaner than what fans actually got.
While speaking on Notsam Wrestling, Big E revealed WWE originally had him set for a singles title feud with Seth Rollins. The plan was for Big E to lose the WWE Championship to Rollins at Day 1, then come back around and win it again at WrestleMania 38.
“The plan was, what we were moving towards initially, was it was supposed to be me and Seth [Rollins] in a singles match at Day 1. I was going to drop the title anyway. So I was supposed to drop the title to Seth. We come back in at WrestleMania, we do it again, and I regain the title.”
Big E said that was supposed to lead to him and Rollins running it back at WrestleMania, but as usual in WWE, the plan started changing before anyone got there.
“At Mania. That was what was originally… you know, things change all the time, so who knows what was meant.”
By December, things were already getting messy. Kevin Owens was added because WWE needed a filler program, then Bobby Lashley got involved, turning the match into a planned four-way.
“So creative, the office, was like, ‘Okay, well, we need a filler program.’ So then KO [Kevin Owens] got added. Then it became a three-way thing for a little bit. Then Bobby [Lashley] needed something to do. Vince [McMahon] loves Bobby. So Bobby’s inserted. So it was supposed to be a four-way at Day 1.”
Then Roman Reigns got sick, Brock Lesnar was added, and the whole thing turned into something completely different. Lesnar ended up winning the title, and Big E’s original WrestleMania redemption arc disappeared.
“Then Roman [Reigns] is sick, now Brock [Lesnar]’s in. So this match that was supposed to be a singles, where I dropped the title at Day 1 and regained it at WrestleMania, doesn’t even look anything close to that anymore. And by the time we get to WrestleMania, my neck is broken. My career is over.”
Big E made it clear he was not telling the story to complain. He was just pointing out how wild the chain reaction became, from one changed match to his entire career ending before the payoff ever had a chance to happen.
“So that whole butterfly effect is kind of insane. And I don’t mention any of this because it’s ‘woe is me, I should have gotten a WrestleMania spot.’ But it’s so funny how life works.”
So yeah, Big E was not just supposed to lose the WWE Title and fade out of the picture. WWE had a full WrestleMania comeback planned for him, but one change after another turned the whole thing upside down.
