Barry Blaustein, the legendary comedy writer and filmmaker behind the iconic wrestling documentary Beyond the Mat, has passed away at the age of 72.
According to TheHollywood Reporter, Blaustein had been battling Parkinson’s disease and was also diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer.
Before becoming known in the wrestling world, Blaustein built a huge career in comedy writing and helped turn Eddie Murphy into a massive Hollywood star through his work on films like Coming to America and The Nutty Professor.
For wrestling fans, however, Blaustein will always be remembered for directing Beyond the Mat, one of the most important wrestling documentaries ever made.
The film followed Blaustein as he explored his lifelong love of professional wrestling and gave fans a raw behind-the-scenes look at the industry through names like Terry Funk, Mick Foley, Jake Roberts, ECW, WWF, and California’s All Pro Wrestling.
Blaustein also shared a close friendship with Terry Funk, who later appeared in Blaustein’s comedy film The Ringer. Even decades later, Beyond the Mat is still viewed by many fans and wrestlers as one of the most honest and influential wrestling documentaries ever produced.
