AJ Styles is not trying to see Sami Zayn’s world title reign get treated like a quick pit stop.
Sami Zayn becoming WWE Undisputed Champion caught a lot of fans off guard, and that is exactly why the move has people talking. While speaking on The Phenomenally Retro Podcast, AJ Styles weighed in on Zayn’s big win and made it clear that he hopes WWE does not just yank the title away from him right away. Styles said he does not like the idea of WWE using Zayn’s win as a cheap flip just to move the championship somewhere else.
“I hate to think that this was like something that is going to be a flip-flop.”
AJ then explained that quick title switches are not exactly the best move when WWE is trying to build something that matters.
“We don’t necessarily do that. It’s not good for business.”
The bigger question now is what WWE actually does with Sami Zayn heading into SummerSlam. AJ admitted that he does not know where the story goes next, but that is part of what makes it interesting. Styles also pushed back on the idea that Zayn should just be a short-term champion. He said Sami is more than capable of carrying the role, especially as the underdog world champion.
“What is going to happen next with Sami Zayn because SummerSlam, one of the big four pay-per-views or PLE’s if you will, like he’s going to be defending it, right?”
“I don’t want to see a transitional champion.”
AJ made it clear he believes WWE has something real to work with if they give Zayn the chance. Styles also admitted the uncertainty is actually helping the story, because fans do not know if Sami is going to survive as champion or get knocked off right away.
“I think that Sami’s more than capable of pulling off being a world champion and totally being the underdog here.”
“I don’t know what the next part of the story is. The great thing about that is that’s a good thing.”
He added that fans worrying about Sami being a placeholder champion only makes the road to SummerSlam more interesting.
“That keeps me interested in what’s going to happen. You got people worried about that Sami’s just going to be a transitional champion.”
Sami Zayn’s title win was already a major shocker, but now WWE has to prove there is a real plan behind it. AJ Styles clearly does not want to see the company waste the moment by turning Sami into a temporary champion just to hand the belt off before SummerSlam.
