AJ Lee isn’t closing the door on another WWE run. After proving to herself that she can still go in the ring, Lee says she’s staying ready—but she needs the right story to bring her back.

While speaking with iHeart Women’s Sports, Lee was asked what comes next for her wrestling career. She admitted that when she initially returned, part of her wondered whether she only had a limited amount of time left to wrestle. Getting back in the ring changed that thinking.

“I mean, we’ll see. Like I’m very—um, there was a piece in me was like, ‘Oh, I just need to like come back with this little time.’ And then when I did, I was like, ‘Oh, I’m—I’m—I’m still kind of killing it.’”

That experience gave Lee confidence in what she can still bring to WWE. Simply wrestling another match isn’t enough to get her interested, though. Lee considers herself story-driven, so whatever brings her back needs to give her something new to sink her teeth into.

“So I’m confident in what I can bring, but I feel like I’m also story driven. And like if there’s a story there, that’s going to be the thing that excites me. It feels like something new that I haven’t done and—and feels like breaking ground.”

For now, Lee isn’t sitting around waiting for WWE to call. She plans to continue writing, working out and making sure she’s prepared if the right opportunity does come along.

“I think that’s always what’s interesting to me. And um, yeah, so we’ll—we’ll see. I’m just going to keep writing and—and working out and—and staying ready.”

That lines up with the recent word surrounding Lee’s WWE future. Lee hasn’t wrestled for WWE since WrestleMania 42, and there currently isn’t another match or return date on the books. However, Fightful Select previously reported that people around WWE don’t believe she has wrestled her final match.

Her name also naturally came up when Paige and the Bella Twins started getting physical at SummerSlam. AJ has plenty of history with both sides, but WWE creative sources hadn’t heard that she was actually planned for that storyline before Brie Bella suffered an injury.

That doesn’t mean Lee needs to be inserted into that particular story. Based on her latest comments, she’s looking for something that feels fresh and gives her a reason to get back into the ring. WrestleMania 42 apparently reminded AJ Lee of something important: she can still do this. Now it sounds like WWE just needs to give her a story worth doing it for.

What story would be big enough to bring AJ Lee back to WWE for another run? Let us know in the comments.
