AEW Grand Slam Mexico still does not have an official date, but Dave Meltzer believes the schedule is starting to tell the story.
During Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer discussed the status of AEW’s return to Mexico and said the show is expected to take place in August. While AEW has not announced the date yet, he narrowed it down to two possible Wednesdays based on the company’s current schedule.
“Yeah. Either going to be based on deductive reasoning, it is going to be held in the month of August, for sure. It will not be on August 19th because they have a show in Baltimore which was moved from the 12th. Interestingly enough, it will not be August 26th because they’re going to be in… God, it’s in Europe. It’s because it’s the Wednesday before All In. It’ll be in… I forgot the city that they’re in. But they’re doing Dynamite in Europe on the 26th. So that leaves the 5th and the 12th. And the fact that the 12th was Baltimore, which was moved to the 19th, maybe, you know, I don’t know if it’s the 5th or the 12th. I’ll just say that it’s one or the other on a Wednesday. And there you go.”
Bryan Alvarez then pointed out that the August 26 episode of Dynamite will take place in Glasgow, Scotland. Meltzer confirmed that, which makes August 5 and August 12 the two dates left standing for Grand Slam Mexico.
“It’s Glasgow, Scotland. Right, right. Yep.”
Meltzer made it clear that the date is not locked in publicly yet, but he expects AEW to finalize things soon. He also noted that Salvador Lutteroth was at Double or Nothing, and he strongly believes Grand Slam Mexico was likely one of the major topics discussed.
“We don’t know the date yet. But I presume that they’ll announce it in the next couple of weeks, you know, and get everything finalized. But Salvador Luderoth was at Double or Nothing. And I presume strongly that that was a main topic of discussion.”
The timing is interesting because Mexico is becoming a major battleground for wrestling right now. WWE and AAA are loading up big shows in Mexico, while AEW’s relationship with CMLL continues to play a major role in its own plans. Meltzer also mentioned that Mexican fans want to see names like Will Ospreay and Kenny Omega, and he expects Omega to be part of Grand Slam Mexico this year.
“I know that in Mexico, I know that the fans really want Ospreay and they really want Omega, you know, as far as like the ones, the guys that they really want to see. Omega has never wrestled in Arena Mexico. Ospreay, of course, wrestled Grand Slam Mexico, but, you know, so I know… I expect Omega was going to be on the Grand Slam Mexico this year. So. But, you know, we’ll see. And that may be where they August, that may be where they shoot the angle actually is Grand Slam Mexico for the anniversary show.”
For now, AEW fans are still waiting on the official word, but the window appears to be getting smaller. If Meltzer’s read on the schedule is correct, Grand Slam Mexico is likely coming on either August 5 or August 12, giving AEW a major summer date in Mexico before the company heads toward All In.
AEW has not confirmed the date yet, but all signs point to August being the month to watch. With WWE and AAA pushing hard in Mexico and AEW continuing its CMLL connection, Grand Slam Mexico could end up being a much bigger piece of the summer calendar than fans first expected.
