Adam Copeland knows his time in the ring is winding down, but he’s not planning on riding off into the sunset without making an impact. Speaking with Stephen Brunt on Up Close, Cope revealed that when the time comes for his final match, he wants to use it to launch the next generation.
“That’s going to be the big decision for me. Who do I get in there with last? I’d love to get in there with a young person and just try and strap a rocket to him. In my last match, what can I do to try to get someone set up? Or at least another block in the foundation to set them up to be able to take it further and further.”
Copeland credited Bret Hart for showing him what it means to give back in wrestling, referencing how The Hitman helped shape his own career. “I think to Bret, and I take his example, and I look at what he did for me. He didn’t need to do that. He didn’t need to put that time in and need to care, but he did. That really taught me the whole giving back is true.”
While he doesn’t want to be “the old guy who is hanging on,” he’s still got some fight left. “I’m thinking maybe two years. Being off with a broken leg has kind of extended it. Six months that I’ve been off, tack that on.”
For now, Cope is still front and center in AEW, currently locked in a feud with AEW World Champion Jon Moxley. At AEW Collision Maximum Carnage, he teams up with FTR, Powerhouse Hobbs, and The Outrunners to face Death Riders (Moxley, Claudio Castagnoli, Wheeler Yuta) & The Learning Tree (Big Bill, Bryan Keith, and Chris Jericho).!
