WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross truly loved his wife Jan, who sadly passed away back in 2017. Ross will always remember how he met his wife but now he has accused Ric Flair of constantly trying to take credit for introducing him to his wife.
While speaking on Podcast Heat Wrestling, Jim Ross said that when people interview him about his book Under the Black Hat, they often ask about his wife Jan. Many times, they bring up Ric Flair and ask if he was the one who introduced them. Ross usually says, “Well, according to Ric, he did.” Jim Ross then explained how he actually met his wife.
“Anytime I’m interviewed about, uh, the book Under the Black Hat, he’ll talk so much about Jan in it—things of that nature, right? And then they had done their research, right? Sure. So they’ll say, ‘Well, didn’t Ric Flair introduce you to your wife?’ I said, ‘Well, according to him, he did.’ But here’s the real story.”
Jim Ross told the real story about a flight from West Virginia to Atlanta on a small US Airways plane. The plane had only four first-class seats, and he and Ric Flair were the only ones sitting there. There were two meals, and since flight attendants didn’t make much money, they often ate leftover food.
Ross noted that Jan was the flight attendant in first class that day. Since no one was officially in those seats, she had eaten the meals. Ross and Flair were already drinking screwdrivers, vodka and orange juice, even though it was still early in the day.
Ric Flair showed off one of his fancy robes that he carried in a garment bag. He had Jan take a look at it, showing off his usual style. Ross tried to talk to her as well, but said it was hard to stand out when Flair was being so charming. At the end of the flight, Jan gave Ross her business card, and he gave her his and that’s how they first met.
“But here’s the real story. We’re flying out of, uh, West Virginia, I believe, going back to Atlanta in a small US Airways regional jet, right? Had four first-class seats—four. ‘Naitch’ and I were the only people in first class. So, we had two meals. And of course, those flight attendants didn’t make any money. Great. So sometimes they’d eat the food, when it was available, right?
So there are two member breakfasts, on and on, and Jan was the first-class flight attendant. So there was nobody listed to be in first class, so she ate her meals. The boy board, it didn’t matter—but we were drinking anyway, again, that morning. The morning hour. Sure. Yeah. Screwdrivers. Mhm. Vodka and orange on track.
So of course, knowing the Nature Boy… oh, sure. And then, uh, he had her look at his robe—’cause he had a big, you know, he always carried that closed-up garment bag, right? Right. So she looked at this robe, and you know, he just Nature Boy’d himself all over. But when I—I was trying to give my stuff, but it wasn’t really… I didn’t think it was resting very well, ’cause nobody out-bulls**** his gift of gab. Plus, he’s Naitch. So at the end of the flight, she gave me her business card, and I gave her mine. That’s how we connected.”
Years later after Ross and Jan were married, they went to a WrestleMania event at the Peabody Hotel. They were talking with a group of people when Ric Flair walked up and joined in. He told everyone that he introduced Ross and Jan and said they wouldn’t have gotten married if it wasn’t for him.
Ross thought about correcting him, but Jan gave him a little signal not to. She knew Ric Flair loved telling that story, so she let him have his moment. Ross remembered how Ric laughed so hard while telling it that he had tears in his eyes.
“But then, later on—several years later, after we had been married—we were at a WrestleMania function. Maybe this was at the Peabody Hotel, the TV hotel. WrestleMania was kind of a cool place to hang out. So there’s a bunch of people around me and her—Jan—the group talking. And here comes Naitch. He tags himself right into the conversation:
‘Did you know I introduced these two? Had it not been for me, they would never have been married.’
Sort of like that. I started to correct it—and she gave me the office, you know. Let him tell his story. He loves telling the story. He does. So she just encouraged it. She just encouraged him even more. ‘But honey, he has so much fun telling the story!’ He’s laughing. He’s got tears in his eyes.”
The Nature Boy always loves making up stories considering he always lives larger-than-life but Jim Ross simply had to make it clear Ric Flair had absolutely nothing to do with him meeting his wife and fans completely understand why.
