Former WWE World Champion Alberto Del Rio, now known as Alberto El Patron, has returned to the spotlight due to his recent signing with WWE via AAA acquisition. However, El Patron is being dogpiled online by wrestling fans due to his controversial past.

A recent report has confirmed that WWE has signed several standout stars from AAA and Alberto El Patron is among other major talents signed. There’s no denying that El Patron has been a lightning rod for controversy despite his successful WWE career in the past. The 47-year-old star was shrouded in controversy in 2014 when he had a run-in with a WWE employee backstage, leading to his release.

El Patron was then brought back in 2015 for another short-lived stint, as he bid farewell again in 2016 due to creative frustrations and Wellness Policy violations. Nonetheless, wrestling fans have taken to social media to criticize WWE’s move.

One fan tweeted: “Lfmao this company doesn’t give a sh*t about anything. They really signed Del Rio after everything he’s done.”

Another fan tweeted: “Del Rio has always sucked.”

Interestingly, a fan called WWE out on their hypocrisy over releasing older talent but signing Alberto Del Rio, who is 47 years old. The tweet reads: “We Fired those talents because of their ages” *signs 47 years old Alberto del rio*

The trolling doesn’t stop there. Wrestling fans are convinced that El Patron would be an albatross around WWE’s neck. Check out what this user tweeted: “That shit really says “Alberto Del Rio” Ya man I’m done with this shit.”

And get a load of this: Fans on X are also severely criticizing WWE for firing Dakota Kai twice and rehiring Del Rio. Here are a few tweets:

“Fires Dakota Kai but signs Alberto Del Rio.”

“YOU FIRE DAKOTA KAI AND REHIRE ALBERTO DEL RIO?!!!”
Needless to say, El Patron is going to surpass Dominik Mysterio in terms of attracting hate and evoking a cacophony of jeers.

This fan did not hold back with this tweet: WWE: “We’re a global brand of empowerment.” Also WWE: re-signs Alberto Del Rio – known abuser, charisma vacuum, sh*t wrestler, general liability, even by AAA’s low standards. Because nothing says ‘fresh start’ like a botch merchant with a criminal record.”

This fan knows something evil is at play, as he conjures up a behind-the-scenes exchange between Triple H and TKO. The user tweeted: “Meanwhile in the legion of WWE Triple H: “let’s sign Alberto Del Rio” TKO BOARDROOM: “yes let’s we make millions regardless” *Evil laughs*”

Here are a few more tweets: “Hiring that POS Alberto Del Rio when you just released a bunch of good quality human beings is baffling. (I know its for AAA but its still disgusting.”)

“No f**kin way they signed Alberto Del Rio.”

At this point, it’s evident that the WWE universe thinks booking Del Rio is tone-deaf booking on the company’s part. It’s worth noting that El Patron was faced with serious legal issues in 2020, as he was charged with aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault. However, due to insufficient evidence, the charges were dropped in 2021.

El Patron’s most recent involvement in a controversy was in March 2025. The former world champion was suspended for six months after his violent altercation with fans during an AAA event.

Whether it’s past arrests, locker room heat, or getting suspended for fighting fans, Alberto El Patron’s return is shaping up to be WWE’s most polarizing move of 2025. The internet isn’t pulling punches, and judging by the wave of backlash, WWE might have more to answer for than they expected. Love him or hate him, Del Rio is back—and if this reaction is any sign, it’s going to be one hell of a ride.
