Ricochet has truly spread his wings as an in-ring performer after joining AEW, as he already competed in Japan and made appearances in NJPW shows. In fact, he has now been named one of the best high-flyers of all time by one of his upcoming opponents.
While speaking in an interview with NJPW’s YouTube channel, Zack Sabre Jr. talked about his upcoming match, where he will defend his IWGP World Heavyweight Championship against Ricochet at NJPW x AEW Wrestle Dynasty on January 5. He praised Ricochet as one of the best high-flyers ever and said his style has influenced many wrestlers, including Will Ospreay.
Sabre Jr. pointed out that Ricochet is stepping into the heavyweight division, which is very different from the junior heavyweight division where Ricochet became famous. Sabre Jr., who has been a heavyweight for eight years, said that while he may not be the biggest, he is the champion.
Sabre Jr. is curious to see how Ricochet performs as a heavyweight, especially on a big stage like the Tokyo Dome. Confidently, Sabre Jr. said he plans to make history by walking into the Tokyo Dome as champion and leaving with the title still in his hands.
“It’s interesting to see him back in New Japan. Obviously, he spent a lot of time here and also in Japan in general. But I’m interested to see how Ricochet is in the heavyweight division. On paper, I’m not a conventional heavyweight. But I think my style is very traditional. I think I adjusted very quickly into being in the heavyweight division in New Japan. I’m still not one of the biggest heavyweights, but the most important thing is, I’m the heavyweight champion, and I’ve been wrestling as a heavyweight for eight years now.
This is gonna be a new environment for Ricochet. But it’s exciting. Ricochet is not only one of the best high-flyers in the world. I think he’s probably one of the best high-flyers of all time. I think Ricochet’s fingerprints and DNA have influenced so many young wrestlers. Will Ospreay would say the same thing himself. But this is not the junior heavyweight division. This is the IWGP World Heavyweight Title, and he’s seeking me out. Equally as important, this is the Tokyo Dome. So I’m very intrigued to see what a heavyweight version of Ricochet can be. I’m making history at the Tokyo Dome by entering as champion and leaving as champion.”
While Ricochet is currently engaged in a heated feud with Swerve Strickland on AEW television, he is fully focused on his upcoming match against Zack Sabre Jr., as Ricochet wants to prove to the world that he is truly one of the best and deserves praise from fans and peers alike no matter what.
