Vince McMahon is certainly one of the most controversial figures in the history of professional wrestling, who had a method to his madness when he ran WWE with an iron fist. He had a lot of peculiarities and now JBL has revealed a reason for McMahon banning several words in WWE.

While speaking on the Something to Wrestle podcast, JBL talked about Vince McMahon’s bizarre peeves when it came to specific words on commentary. He revealed that McMahon wanted commentators to use more formal language. He didn’t like words like “very” or simple phrases. For example, instead of saying “very happy,” McMahon wanted them to say “ecstatic.” Vince McMahon thought it made the commentary sound smarter.

McMahon also disliked the use of “that” and “the” in certain ways. JBL said phrases like “that arm” or “the arm” were not allowed. McMahon thought they sounded unprofessional and wanted the commentary to feel polished and intelligent.

“Vince didn’t like a lot of things like ‘very,’. Like you’re ‘very’ happy. Learn English was Vince McMahon’s mindset. Say ‘ecstatic,’ say something. Vince didn’t like that because he thought it sounded redneck-ish or stupid. He wanted better words. He wanted a more sophisticated commentary than that. And he hated the word ‘that.’ You say the word ‘that’ arm. Oh my God. Phew, that’s a no-no! That is a no-no! It’s ‘the’ arm or it’s the ‘right’ arm. It’s not ‘that’ arm. Vince hated the term ‘that’ and ‘the.'”

Vince McMahon was well known to be particular about the verbiage used on WWE television, and so it comes as no surprise McMahon was so strict in his views and only wanted to present the product in his own vision and no one else’s. While his rules might seem unusual to some, they show how much he valued language in shaping WWE’s image, so it’s not hard to see why he ran WWE the way that he did.

What are your thoughts on Vince McMahon’s language bans? Do you think they improved WWE’s commentary, or were they unnecessarily strict? Please share your thoughts and feedback in the comment section below.
