Rey Fenix has fans questioning his future in AEW after he abruptly deleted tweets accusing the company of “inhumane treatment” and neglecting his medical needs. The tweets, which appeared to vent frustrations over his injury and lack of support, were up long enough to spark speculation about what’s really happening behind the curtain.

The controversy deepened when Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Fenix might be attempting to get fired. “Rey Fenix, who is currently under a contract extended due to injury time while Penta’s deal expired at the end of the month, has hinted about bad treatment. He’s been vague for contract reasons, but it looks like it’s a situation regarding an injury and seeing a doctor,” Meltzer explained.

Fenix’s frustrations could stem from being sidelined by AEW since rumors surfaced that he and his brother, Penta El Zero Miedo, were looking to jump ship to WWE. Meltzer also noted that Tony Khan’s strategy differs from some promoters in these scenarios. “If a guy was leaving, they would just take them off television until their contract is up. Khan would rather give the television time to people who are staying,” he wrote.

With Fenix reportedly still under contract due to time added from his injury absence, Meltzer believes the star may be exploring ways to force AEW’s hand. “I think right now Fenix is looking at being fired. ,” Meltzer added, pointing out that WWE and AEW contracts have similar clauses allowing extensions for missed time.

This situation isn’t unique to Fenix. Meltzer shared examples of WWE talent who tried similar tactics to get out of their contracts but were unsuccessful. “I’ve had discussions with WWE talent in this situation who came up with some wild ideas to get fired… but it doesn’t work, and they don’t get fired,” he noted.

Despite being off AEW television, Fenix continues to fulfill outside obligations, including an upcoming signing event with House of Glory in Queens, NY, on December 20. However, fans are left wondering if the Lucha Brothers’ AEW tenure is truly coming to an end and whether Fenix’s alleged attempts to leave the company will lead to his release.

Rey Fenix’s deleted tweets and rumored frustrations have opened the door to endless speculation.
