AEW started their company out with the idea that their stars could get involved with other pro wrestling companies on their free time, as long as it didn’t conflict with any AEW television shows. Ricky Starks recently saw himself getting pulled from a GCW show, but he is not alone.
Sean Ross Sapp reported on Fightful Select that another AEW talent has been removed from upcoming GCW shows. GCW claimed that Willie Mack has been removed from next weekend’s GCW shows. The company is reportedly under the impression this still stems from Effy’s comments about AEW and Tony Khan.
In case you need a refresher, Effy suggested that Tony Khan might not be the best fit for his roles, implying he secured his seat at the table through his father’s influence. He pointed out AEW’s financial losses last year and noted that a company like GCW wouldn’t survive with setbacks like that. Effy also criticized AEW for scheduling a show at Hammerstein Ballroom just one month before GCW’s event there, and he went on to say a lot more on top of that.
Willie Mack is under AEW contract, so this is very interesting. Tony Khan had previously let his wrestlers appear for other companies, but it appears that GCW may not get the green light now.
In recent memory, WWE and GCW have been getting a bit closer. Several NXT Superstars took part in the recent GCW sponsored Josh Barnett’s Bloodsport XII event.
GCW recently saw a member of their roster get a WWE IDC deal. Jack Cartwheel getting scouted from GCW appears to not have anything to do with AEW stars getting pulled from the promotion’s events, but this is certainly an interesting situation. Obviously, there is a lot more going on behind the scenes.
We will have to see if this situation resolves itself. Only time will tell if there will be more to unpack on this whole situation later on.
