Chad Gable turned heel back in April and has been booked in one of the best storylines of his career so far. It has been a long and arduous road for Gable and it appears a former WWE writer believes Gable would have been released if he remained Shorty G.

Chad Gable’s career hit a rough patch when he was rebranded as Shorty G on WWE’s main roster. The 38-year-old wrestler found himself subject to ridicule due to the gimmick’s corny nature, leaving his career in a state of uncertainty. However, Gable eventually reverted to his original persona and took the initiative to establish his academy, a move that revitalized and potentially salvaged his career.

During an appearance on Cheap Heat, Brian Gewirtz was asked about Chad Gable’s recent performances. The former head writer commended Gable’s work and highlighted how the right gimmick can elevate a wrestler. Gewirtz even went as far as to suggest that Gable may have faced termination from the promotion if they hadn’t ended the Shorty G gimmick.

“It really does show the power of faith in a talent and what the right gimmick can be versus the wrong gimmick. I can imagine people saying when Chad Gable came on the scene, like, ‘This is another Kurt Angle, potentially!’

It could’ve easily been, ‘No, thanks!’ We’re sticking with Shorty G. We’re going to see this out till the end, and then you see in a very small section of the WWE website, ‘We have come to terms with the release of Shorty, aka Chad Gable, we wish him well in his future endeavors’ and who knows what could’ve happened, but to Chad’s credit, he stuck through it. He stuck through that phase, and he never stopped working. He’s earned this push or the amount of television time that he’s been getting.”

As previously reported, Chad Gable’s contract will expire on June 7th, but he will face Sami Zayn at the Clash at the Castle Premium Live Event, scheduled for June 15. Therefore, we’ll have to wait and see if he will stick with WWE in the end as the options are truly limitless for him.
