During last week’s WWE Raw, the ongoing clash between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre took center stage, with Punk delivering some pointed remarks for The Scottish Warrior after McIntyre had exited the arena. During his promo, Punk made a nod to his altercation with Jack Perry in AEW, branding McIntyre as “a choke artist” but clarifying that McIntyre’s brand of choking differed from his own.

Reflecting on the promo, former WWE star Nic Nemeth weighed in on Busted Open Radio, sharing his perspective on the matter. While acknowledging that WWE referencing AEW on television might raise eyebrows for some, Nemeth didn’t view it as a significant issue.

“It was a little jab thrown in,” Nemeth remarked. “That’s okay. I think it’s perfectly fine. When you’re potentially integrating another company into long-term storytelling, then it becomes a bit more complex.”

Nemeth argued that such references could help WWE fans unfamiliar with other wrestling promotions understand Punk’s activities during his time away from WWE. However, he acknowledged the challenge of ensuring the audience doesn’t become confused amid such crossover mentions.

“I enjoy these subtle nods now and then,” Nemeth added. “As long as they land, that’s cool. But if I decided to ad-lib a line making fun of WCW without approval, and it falls flat, when I return backstage, I’d likely be told, ‘You’re not speaking next week.’ And I’d accept that.”

Nemeth emphasized that when wrestlers deliver risky promos, they’re essentially betting on themselves. Thus far, he believes both Punk and McIntyre are thriving in this regard, showcasing their prowess in engaging the audience.

What are your thoughts on the recent crossover references between WWE and AEW, particularly regarding CM Punk’s promo targeting Drew McIntyre? Do you agree with Nic Nemeth’s perspective that such nods can add depth to storytelling, or do you have concerns about potential confusion among the audience?
