At the AEW Dynasty pay-per-view, Swerve Strickland achieved a historic milestone by dethroning the formidable Samoa Joe to claim the AEW World Championship. In doing so, he not only secured his place as the eighth man to hold the title but also made history as the first African American to do so.

Moreover, AEW veteran Mark Henry also underscored that while representation matters, Strickland’s triumph is testament to his talent and unwavering dedication that led to his glorious moment at AEW Dynasty.

In regards to his Swerve’s monumental win, AEW President and CEO Tony Khan during an interview with Josh Martinez for New York’s Z100, proclaimed that Strickland would be a great champion and representative for AEW, sitting at the top of the mountain as the World Champion.

“I think Swerve is gonna be such a great champion for AEW. A great face and representative for the company. We’re very lucky to have Swerve Strickland as the AEW World Champion. I’m really excited about a lot of things happening in AEW.”
