WCW Legend Backs Cody Rhodes for Top Spot: He Is ‘The Guy’

WCW legend Lex Luger has expressed his admiration for Cody Rhodes and his wish to see Cody become the one to dethrone Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship in the main event of WrestleMania 40.

However, Luger acknowledged the potential challenge that The Rock’s return to WWE presents. While he believes that Cody Rhodes should be the top babyface in WWE, he recognizes that the opportunity to bring The Rock back to the wrestling ring might be too enticing for WWE to pass up.

Luger shared his thoughts on The Rock’s potential return during an episode of his Lex Expressed podcast. He mentioned that he is personally a big fan of Cody Rhodes and believes he deserves a shot at the championship. Luger sees Cody as a great babyface Champion who could lead WWE for many years.

“Cody, I think he’s so deserving of getting that shot again,” said Lex. “Maybe I am biased. I love Cody. I really love his work. I love everything about him. I think he’d be a great babyface Champion that could carry them for many years. Then again, with TKO now involved in the decision-making process, can you turn down The Rock?

Nevertheless, Luger also acknowledges The Rock’s immense global popularity and status as a movie star, making him a significant draw for WWE. He speculates that WWE might have a challenging decision to make if The Rock expresses his desire to wrestle Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40.

“I think Cody should be the guy. Me personally, my personal preference, I think [Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns at WWE WrestleMania 40] would be an amazing matchup, rematch,” Lex continues. “If The Rock says he wants to come to WrestleMania and wrestle Roman, almost as a company — he’s a global superstar, not just in wrestling, but a global pop culture movie star. So, I can’t imagine the people in charge now saying, ‘Well, thanks but no thanks, Rock.’ So I think that it’s really going to be in The Rock’s hands almost when you think about it.”

Luger mentioned that The Rock’s age should also be considered, as he’s no longer in his prime and doesn’t have to wrestle if he doesn’t want to. The decision to return to the ring and risk injury would depend on The Rock’s personal desire and willingness to get back into wrestling shape.

“Depending on what he wants to do, if he wants to do one and get back in the ring because he’s not a spring chicken anymore. he’s past 50 now, right? He doesn’t have to wrestle anymore if he doesn’t want to. So, to get in shape, risk an injury, and do a bell-to-bell match when he hasn’t done that in such a long time. it’s a big deal for a guy like that. I know he likes everything to be tip-top. He’ll want to be in tip-top shape. So, if he wants to do it, I can’t see them saying no. It’s in his hands.”

In the end, Luger believes that the decision may ultimately rest in The Rock’s hands, considering his status and potential drawing power for WrestleMania.
