Ric Flair inked deal with AEW, and that was a big surprise. It turns out that he went to WWE first.

It was previously reported that Ric Flair’s AEW deal resembles the one “Macho Man” Randy Savage inked with WCW in the mid-1990s. Part of Flair’s contract also includes an agreement with the Wooooo! Energy drink, which is expected to cover a substantial portion, if not all, of Flair’s AEW contract salary.

Ric Flair’s brand and the significant merchandising potential were identified as the primary reasons behind AEW’s signing of the sixteen-time world champion. This was a bit of a shock for a lot of people who were under the assumption that he was under a WWE contract.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that Ric Flair actually went to WWE first. They could not ink a deal with his energy drink, because they already have an energy drink sponsorship in place. So, the Nature Boy took the deal to AEW.

Ric Flair signed a two-year deal with AEW, which was actually two different deals. The original deal was a sponsorship deal for his “Whooooo!” energy drink as the official energy drink of AEW. They had attempted to make a deal with WWE for the drink but WWE already had an energy drink deal in place, so they went to AEW and got the deal done.

That two-year deal with AEW will likely see Ric Flair show up from time to time. That being said, don’t expect to see him wrestle. His last match is likely going to stay that way, but you can also never say never when you’re talking about The Nature Boy.
