Why FTR Have Been So Open About AEW Contract Status

FTR are Top Guys in AEW, but they are without a championship now. 2022 was a great year for them, and they already carried gold in 2023. Now, their contract situation this year could be even more interesting.

FTR challenged The Gunns for the AEW World Tag Team Titles this week on Dynamite. If FTR loses the match, then they will leave AEW.

During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer brought up FTR’s situation. He also noted that their contract storyline is likely why Tony Khan has been okay with Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler talking about their contracts in such an open way.

“So, this is probably an explanation of why those guys have been doing the thing that ‘we’re gonna leave’ and teasing leaving and Tony Khan probably being okay with it, because in his mind this fits the storyline. Because if you tell people that you’re going to leave and your contract is up, then people will go, ‘well maybe this is it, maybe they’re gonna lose and leave.'”

It was also noted that Dave Meltzer doesn’t believe that FTR is leaving AEW, because they will likely win the AEW World Tag Team Titles. The Gunns are quite a team, but FTR are Top Guys.

Only time will tell if the Top Guys are out or not, but this certainly threw an unexpected aspect to their storyline. Obviously, AEW fans are going to pay close attention to FTR’s situation now.
