William Regal’s contributions to the pro wrestling world can never be understated, as he has truly given his entire life to the business. He was released from WWE at the very beginning of this year, which shocked many. Despite his release, Vince McMahon allowed Regal to use his current name.

William Regal, real name Darren Matthews, was let go by WWE on January 5th of this year, bringing an end to a 22-year run with the company. Lord Regal eventually made his way to AEW a couple of months later.

While speaking during a K & S WrestleFest virtual signing, Regal revealed that he owns the name, but was prepared to stop using it if Vince McMahon told him to. However, McMahon actually gave him his blessing to use the name.

“I own William Regal but if Mr. McMahon asked me not to use it, I wouldn’t use it … I’d be just Steven Regal. He gave me his blessing. No problems with me and Mr. McMahon at all.”

As previously reported, William Regal signed a 3-year deal with AEW, so he still has plenty of time left on his contract. Despite this, Regal’s WWE return is still in play. We’ll have to see whether Regal will stay in AEW for the long run or not.
