Thunder Rosa is the current AEW Women’s Champion, but the company will soon crown an interim champion. Rosa worked well between the ropes, but she is currently injured. The champion had a successful defense against all of her opponents in AEW, but sadly she won’t be at all out. It turns out that she wanted to drop her title all together, but Tony Khan wouldn’t have it.
Rosa had to step back from AEW All Out due to a back injury. She was previously slated to face Toni Storm for the title, but now a new match will happen. A fatal-four-way between Britt Baker, Jamie Hayter, Hikaru Shida, and Toni Storm to decide the interim women’s champion will go down instead.
Tony Khan talked about this situation on Busted Open Radio and confirmed that he asked Rosa and CM Punk to remain champions, heal, and return. Meanwhile, there will be an interim champion. Upon Thunder Rosa’s return, a unification match will happen.
“I have told her [Thunder Rosa] just as I mentioned to CM Punk when he was injured that, ‘I would like for you to remain the champion. Get healthy, come back’ and we’ll have a big unification match to crown an undisputed champion when Thunder Rosa returns. Both of them offered to relinquish the title and I told each of them, separately, when they came back from their injuries, they would still be recognized as the champion but by the time they came back, there would be an interim champion which would set up an exciting situation.”
Khan also confirmed that Thunder Rosa wanted to relinquish the title. He opted not to do that. Khan believes everyone gets an opportunity in this manner, and upon return, there will be an excellent match for the fans.
It would be interesting to see how things pan out in the time to come. Keep checking back with Ringside News for more!
