The Young Bucks recently lost the AEW World Tag Team Titles after a “Triple or Nothing” match against Swerve in Our Glory and the team of Powerhouse Hobbs and Ricky Starks. When Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson made the initial challenge, fans loudly chanted for FTR. While it seems like a no-brainer to have The Bucks take on Dax and Cash with multiple championships on the line, that was never the plan.

FTR has been one of the most dominant tag teams on the AEW scene. They hold multiple international championships and have been looking to add the AEW titles to their resume. Instead, Tony Khan opted to put the titles on Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland.

In this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer explained that the match between the Bucks and FTR wasn’t the initial plan. While fans are clamoring to see a rematch between the two teams, a different major angle has been in the works for some time. That angle is complicated by some ongoing injury issues.

“Even though fans clearly wanted FTR vs. Young Bucks with all four tag titles at stake, as noted by the impromptu reaction last week, that was not the plan, at least for now. It could be something done long-term, but maybe not that dream tag match where you have two or the best teams of the era with belts from AEW, New Japan, AAA and ROH all in one match which could be viewed as historical. But not sure how long FTR would hold the IWGP and AAA belts.

But there was a different major angle planned for the Young Bucks soon. Obviously Young Bucks & Kenny Omega vs. Adam Cole & Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly was a direction and AEW was going to introduce trios titles when Omega was healthy, but with Omega and Cole both out of action, no word on how close that would be.”

There is no timetable for the return of Kenny Omega. Adam Cole’s injury status also makes his return uncertain, as he will try to heal from concussion and rehab a torn labrum without surgery. With no plans for Matt and Nick Jackson to face FTR at the moment, it will be interesting to see what Tony Khan comes up with for The Young Bucks.
