CM Punk was riding high after defeating “Hangman” Adam Page for the AEW World Championship at the Double or Nothing pay-per-view. Shortly after winning the title, Punk announced that he was injured and would need surgery. Since then, Jon Moxley was crowned the interim AEW champ while Punk took time to heal. There has been plenty of speculation about when the Second City Saint might return to action.

Punk even missed a major event in his hometown. He was originally scheduled to defend the AEW Championship against Hiroshi Tanahashi at the Forbidden Door event. Instead, Moxley got the spot and CM Punk did not appear in Chicago.

On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed Punk’s current injury status. It was noted that surgery for a broken foot usually has a recovery time of a couple of months. Meltzer believes CM Punk will be back in the mix soon.

“Punk probably, I don’t know when the time frame is and I think that they are trying not to let you know, but I’m pretty sure he’ll be back… You know, surgery for a broken foot, it’s a couple months. But it’s not like it’s six months, you know, so he probably won’t be that long.”

AEW has been dealing with a huge rash of injuries. Bryan Danielson is out with a concussion. Kenny Omega has missed months while dealing with several injuries that have accumulated over time. Adam Cole and others are also injured, leaving Tony Khan to rely on his deep roster to keep things moving.

The return of CM Punk will be a huge shot in the arm for AEW. Punk already has a match with Jon Moxley to unify his title with the interim championship for a ready-made big match. It now appears to only be a matter of time before that happens.
