Cody Rhodes will miss several months after his recent surgery to repair torn pectoral tendon. Rhodes was red hot when he was hurt, making for some terrible timing. His gutsy performance at Hell in a Cell against Seth Rollins arguably made him the top babyface in the company.

When Cody comes back, there will be a ready-made story to tell as he attempts to pursue his dream of world championship. WWE went so far as to film Cody’s entire surgery for later use. It could be part of an emotional package to reintroduce The American Nightmare when the time comes. On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed WWE’s possible plans upon Rhodes’ return.

“I don’t know that they’ll talk about him for nine months, you know, every week on television or anything. They could do it now. It’s interesting that they did not do a video feature on the surgery because they filmed the whole surgery. I guess maybe they’ll save that for months down the line. It makes, actually, more sense to focus on it when he’s about to come back than now because anything they do now, they can’t really cash in on it, for, I don’t want to say nine months, but five, six months, anyway.

It was interesting, too, that Rollins… They’re trying to make the story that Rollins took him out with the sledgehammer and that he was going to do Money in the Bank on the torn pec, but Rollins injured him to take him out of Money in the Bank. Obviously, that’s not the case, but you know, that’s an attempt to use Cody’s injury to heat up Rollins.”

With the story between Seth Rollins and Cody Rhodes waiting for Cody’s return, WWE could present an epic comeback angle. Seth Rollins could win the undisputed championship at some point, making for a natural finish to Cody’s comeback story. After several months away, airing Cody’s surgery in a video package would be the perfect way to get him back over.

WWE won’t have to worry about the fans forgetting about Cody Rhodes. Having his operation filmed was a brilliant move to eventually regain any sympathy that fans might have lost due to his absence. Time will tell how effective the company is at using the video to tell Cody’s story.
