Samoa Joe surprised everyone when he debuted at the ROH Supercard of Honor pay-per-view. The Ring of Honor alumn got a huge reaction and signed with AEW shortly after the show. Joe almost wasn’t able to make it on time because bad weather made it difficult to find a flight that wasn’t canceled.

Joe is a key pillar in the history of Ring of Honor. When Tony Khan bought the company, it only made sense to include him in the brand. Shortly after he announced the purchase, TK put the ROH TV title on Samoa Joe.

On a recent episode of AEW Unrestricted, Samoa Joe talked about just how close he was to not making it to Supercard of Honor. The weather was not cooperating at his local airport. Joe had to drive to a small town to board a private jet and made it just in time.

“Oh, absolutely, I know there was weather permitting jets to get to Tampa on time. And a lot of mechanical issues on flights that went out. So, I had to end up driving to Cross City, Florida, a small little rural town in the middle of Florida to catch a private jet to get up to the show.

The best part was, as I arrived to the airport and I walked into this little office, this little man sitting behind the counter looked at me. I said, ‘Hey man, I am here, I’ve got a jet coming in to pick me up,’ he said, ‘What time?’ I said, ‘I think seven o’clock,’ he said, ‘well, we close a six, man, I’ll see what I can do.’”

Samoa Joe was, fortunately, able to make it and deliver on Tony Khan’s big surprise. Since then, he has been keeping ROH alive as TV champ while Khan shops for a TV partner for the brand. Things could have been a lot different if Joe was unable to attend Supercard of Honor, but thankfully, it all worked out.
