Lucha Libre AAA crowned new mixed tag team champions at this weekend’s TripleMania event in Monterrey. AEW’s Sammy Guevara and Tay Conti fought in a four-way with Chik Tormenta & Arez, Lady Maravilla & Latigo, and Komander & Sexy Star. Sammy and Tay walked out with the titles, although Guevara was extremely limited in his in-ring action.

It was reported that Sammy Guevara was injured during his TNT title ladder match with Scorpio Sky on last week’s AEW Dynamite. Sammy landed awkwardly on his neck and shoulder after attempting a death-defying move from the top of the ladder. That didn’t keep him from showing up for his title match in Mexico, but it did keep him out of the ring for most of the bout. Dave Meltzer discussed Sammy’s limited participation on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio.

“So, this was an interesting one. So, Tay Conti and Sammy Guevara were supposed to win the mixed tag team title, but Sammy is hurt. He was running around pretty good, but he wasn’t taking any big bumps or anything like that, so he did not wrestle and Parka Negra teamed with Tay Conti and then Arez and Chik Tormenta are the champions. Komander teamed with Sexy Star. Komander’s great. Great young wrestler. People having been raving about him for a long time. This was his first match ever on a TripleMania. Really, really looked good. And then, Latigo and Lady Maravilla.

So, late in the match… The match was going on and you had all kinds of big dives one after the other. Komander did a rope walk into a moonsault on Parka Negra among others. He was pretty impressive. And then, they had Sammy just basically broke up a pin. Arez did a Spanish Fly on Sexy Star out of the ring onto everyone then Sammy started getting involved. He hit Chik Tormenta with his crutch. He came out like limping, like he had a knee injury.

So, I knew… His shoulder and neck is hurt, but not his knee. Then he hit Arez with the crutch as well and then Tay hit the Tay-KO on Chik Tormenta and Sammy pinned Chik Tormenta. He replaced Parka Negra in the match like in the last minute or so, so, it kind of makes absolutely no sense if you think about it, but it was they way that they could get the belts on Sammy and Tay while Sammy really couldn’t do a match yet. It’s not like they’re going to be back right away. I would presume you would want them back for the Tijuana show, that’s June 18, which is the second TripleMania. Sammy and Tay came off like really big stars. You know, just coming out and doing the French kissing and the whole bit.”

There has been no confirmation on the seriousness of Sammy Guevara’s injury. He was limited during his match at TripleMania. We will have to wait and see if he can get back in the ring for a full match any time soon.
