Lacey Evans recently returned to WWE television after a long spell of not being used at all. Evans announced on the February 15 edition of Raw that she was pregnant. She hadn’t been on TV since then but finally appeared in vignette in April. Since then, Evans has been established as huge babyface on SmackDown.

WWE originally had huge plans for Lacey Evans. As a heel, things didn’t quite work out. Lacey was most recently featured as a heel in a romance storyline with Ric Flair where she feuded with his daughter, Charlotte Flair.

On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed the original plan for Lacey Evans. The idea was to have her evolve from a heel into the hero she is being portrayed as today. Dave was baffled that it took this long to figure out that given her background, Evans is a natural babyface.

“I’ve seen people screw up a lot better than this. But, I don’t know… Again, when they first gave her that big heel push, the design always was to eventually make her a babyface with this stuff. I don’t know why it took them this many years.

I remember at first, it was like, ‘Why are you pushing her?’ and it’s like, ‘She’s got a great story, she’s got a great look,’ you know, and all this. It’s like, ‘Yeah, I know the story, but it’s like you’re not telling it.’ Well, she’s a heel. Yeah, OK, that makes sense.

I think they thought that she could be like this superstar heel because of the look and everything like that and the gimmick. And, you know, now she’s doing the other gimmick. So, we shall see, but she should get a big push off of this.”

It was also pointed out that Lacey Evans’ natural heel enemy would be Charlotte Flair. That could happen down the road. For now, Charlotte is set for an I Quit match with Ronda Rousey for the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Lacey is just establishing her character and waiting her turn.
