AEW Battle Of The Belts Did Terrible Viewership Numbers In Canada

AEW recently held their “Battle of the Belts” special on TNT. The card featured three championship bouts. Britt Baker finally defeated Riho in the main event to defend the AEW Women’s World Championship. It was generally regarded to have been very good for a one-hour show. One segment of fans didn’t seem to be paying much attention.

Canadian audiences might not have even known Battle of the Belts was going to be broadcast. On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer pointed out that the show did not perform well with viewers in Canada. It may have been because there was no promotion for the show.

“They actually aired that show, the Battle of the Belts, in Canada. But I guess nobody knew, because it did not do any numbers. It did… about the same as what NXT Takeovers would do on TV there, which is not good. But, I don’t think people even knew it was on television because the only stuff they usually get is Dynamite.”

Battle of the Belts received last-minute change. COVID has been wrecking plans for every wrestling promotion. This time, Cody Rhodes had to be replaced in his TNT title defense by his brother Dustin. Sammy Guevara became the interim TNT Champion. Cody will likely have something to say about that when he returns from quarantine.

AEW plans to run these specials regularly. If they are going to air in Canada, AEW might want to do more to promote the events. There are plenty of Canadian stars in AEW that fans would love to see more of.

A new era is beginning for Tony Khan’s All Elite Wrestling. Dynamite recently moved to their new home on TBS. Hopefully Canadian fans don’t have to jump through hoops to find out about future broadcasts.
