Kenny Omega and Hangman Adam Page will finally square off for the AEW World title this Saturday night at the Full Gear PPV. Fans have been clamoring for the match since Omega became champion. After a pandemic and the birth of Page’s child, it’s finally going to come to fruition in Minneapolis.

Dave Meltzer gave a brief history of the build to the match on Wrestling Observer Radio. He points to the very first press conference where AEW was founded as the start of the years-long story arc. The match has been what All Elite Wrestling has been building to since day one.

“Omega and Page is a match that has been promoted in its own way since almost the beginning of the company as far as Page winning the championship from the beginning of the company. The first press conference in January 2019 in Jacksonville, Page said he was going to win the title, and we all knew the big thing they were going to build to in a couple of years was the coronation of Adam Page as champion. That was always the plan.

This is the culmination of that the whole Adam Page breaking up from Young Bucks and Omega and sorta going heel and then him and Omega winning the tag team titles and then you knew they were going to do the breakup and eventually they were going to do the big match and they did the big match that Omega won. The match was supposed to be at All Out in September, but they moved it back because Page’s wife was pregnant, so they moved it to this show and here we are.”

It’s rare to see long-term storytelling like this in today’s wrestling. Whether you’re a fan of the promotion or not, you have to admire that they made a plan and stuck to it. Fans that have waited over two years are finally going to get the big payoff. It’s refreshing to see a long storyline get a proper blowoff.

AEW Full Gear airs on pay-per-view on Saturday night. It’s a stacked show, with three title matches and plenty of feuds to be settled. Also, Bryan Danielson and Miro will square off to decide the new #1 contender for the AEW World title. The full card is below.
