Edge piqued a lot of interest this week on SmackDown when Seth Rollins invaded his home. That home invasion segment, filmed at Edge’s actual Asheville, North Carolina residence, hit the mark with many fans. Following the segment, Edge was shown talking to Beth Phoenix on the phone and the WWE Hall of Famer informed his wife that he called “Daniel and David” for help.

It didn’t take long for fans to realize that Daniel and David was a direct reference to Daniel Wheeler and David Harwood. Some fans might know them better as FTR.

While the internet wrestling community really got a kick out of the Top Guys getting referenced on SmackDown long after their exit from the company, fans were apparently the only ones who really cared. It’s not like Edge said “Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler” or even made a reference to The Revival or FTR. He simply said “David and Daniel.”

Ringside News asked around about the internal response to Edge dropping that inside baseball reference on Fox. A tenured member of the creative team told us that “[Edge] must have played right to the Internet on that one.”

Additionally, we were told that “no one backstage cared. Not Vince McMahon, Bruce Prichard, John Laurinaitis or Kevin Dunn.” It seems that slick reference of two former Superstars who left WWE in favor of AEW didn’t land at all in the front office.

Edge is a clever guy and inserting Daniel and David into this segment was special for a lot of fans. If those fans noticed the connection between FTR, then that’s great for them; because higher ups in WWE didn’t seem to care at all.

I love pro wrestling and hate BS. These two things drive me. Years of experience in writing, journalism, and digging exclusive insider info for Ringside News. Worked in finance before realizing pro wrestling journalism made much less sense. Pro beachballs at pro wrestling shows, pro dives if someone catches, anti bullies, olives, and pineapples on pizza.
