WWE history is full of big ideas that just didn’t pan out. The Gobbledy Gooker is a classic example of a lot of hype followed by zero follow-up. This would become more of a trend for Vince McMahon’s company as the years went on.

During Wrestling Observer Radio this week, they discussed Terry Funk’s current situation. He is in an assisted living home, but thanks to report from Tommy Dreamer, we know that the Funker is doing a bit better than everyone feared. Dave Meltzer brought up a very interesting conversation that he had with Terry Funk years ago about The Gobbledy Gooker gimmick. Apparently, Funk thought that character was going to be a big hit.

“He told me that Hector Guerrero is going to WWE and he’s gonna be a big, big star. I said, ‘really?’ He said, ‘yeah, he’s got a gimmick he’s gonna be a chicken. I go, ‘oh god,’ but he was wrong on that one. That gimmick flopped.”

The Gobbledy Gooker did re-appear in recent memory at Survivor Series, but Drew Gulak was in the turkey costume. He even won the WWE 24/7 Title under that moniker. The Gooker gimmick didn’t really become that much of a success, but it certainly lived on in WWE History.
