Edge and Randy Orton battled at Backlash in the Greatest Wrestling Match Ever, but was it really the best match ever?

The Viper and Rated R Superstar battled for over forty minutes at Backlash. Their war saw Randy Orton win the match. Edge won’t have chance for immediate revenge as he was injured while re-shooting spots after they already filmed the initial match.

During WWE Backstage, CM Punk gave his honest opinion about the Greatest Wrestling Match Ever. There was a lot of pressure on Edge and Orton before the match. The build-up didn’t do them any favors. In the end, Punk said he’s seen better matches out of both of them in the past.

“I think if you’re Randy and Edge you just ignore that, you can’t live up to that, it’s too subjective of a label,” Punk said. “‘Greatest Match of All-Time,’ what’s the ‘Greatest Single of All-Time’? Music wise. What’s the ‘Greatest Band of All-Time’? It’s too subjective. Everybody’s gonna have a different opinion, but I think that’s what makes wrestling great. … I think they had a great match. Was it the greatest match of all-time? I’ve seen better Randy Orton matches. I’ve seen better Edge matches.”

“To put that on the marquee, and get people to watch, I kind of feel like it was a lot of unnecessary pressure — especially on Edge — coming back after almost a decade of not wrestling. They did a great job of compartmentalizing that, and almost ignoring it, just going out there and delivering.”

Edge and Randy Orton’s story might not be done in WWE. It will be quite a while until Edge can make a return after he required surgery for a torn triceps. Christian returned to action the next night to seemingly pick things up for Edge.

CM Punk is never one to hold back his opinion, so he’s not going to say that Edge vs Orton at Backlash was the greatest ever. At least he seemed to enjoy it.
