Jon Moxley left WWE, but he wasn’t happy about it. At the time he thought that Vince McMahon’s company was just forcing him to leave because of bad storylines. Mox had no idea that AEW would be a thing when he made the initial decision to exit.

While speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Jon Moxley explained why he went radio silent for a while after he left WWE. He wanted people to wonder where he would show up next. Mox eventually went to both AEW and NJPW, but it was also during that time when speculation started to rise that he would be returning to WWE.

“Then I did the video and I had to go radio silent for a few months. I had to go into hiding. I didn’t even answer my phone or nothing because I didn’t want any — maybe I’d answer the phone if my mom called me or something — but I wanted people to wonder ‘is he gonna show up in Ring Of Honor, AEW, Impact, New Japan, or WWE.'”

“I wanted to people to have no idea and I think it was pretty effective. The pay-off to the video was popping up at Double Or Nothing and everyone instantly got it. They knew I’m Jon Moxley now. They knew my name they weren’t chanting like ‘Shield’ or anything. It was just a totally fresh new start instantly out of the gate.”

“AEW’s just off to the races and the timing of it is crazy, just serendipitous timing.”

The timing for everything did seem to work out perfectly for Jon Moxley. He is now one of the top names in AEW and he hopes to be difference maker. We’ll have to see what position AEW and Moxley are in this time next year, but at this time Jon Moxley seems very satisfied with his decision.
