Why WWE Paired Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode On RAW

Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode became #1 contenders for Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman’s RAW Tag Team Titles. This surprised a lot of fans and inspired a few memes in the process.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that Paul Heyman was pulling for Robert Roode backstage. The tag team turmoil match was set to be a launching pad to push Roode and Ziggler as they won four matches in a row to become #1 contenders.

The show was about creating new tag title contenders in one night by having a gauntlet match, and using Roode & Ziggler in that role winning four times. Heyman is a proponent of Roode so this was kind of meant as a showcase to get him going after he was slotted as a nobody for so long. In addition,
