Asuka was the SmackDown Women’s Champion with just two weeks before WrestleMania. WWE arranged a #1 contender’s fatal four-way match on the blue brand’s show last week, but that didn’t happen. Instead, Charlotte Flair came out and became an 8-time WWE Women’s Champion.

Tom Colohue of PW Torch reports that the reason why WWE decided to take the title off of Asuka was because they lost faith in the match they actually had planned for her. This might upset some fans, but it also opens WWE up for a historic close for the show of shows.

To my knowledge the plan for #Wrestlemania for the #SDLive women’s championship was Asuka vs Rose vs Deville with Asuka retaining. #WWE lost confidence in the match and decided to put the belt on Charlotte instead.

Only time will tell if Asuka could get another shot at the SmackDown Women’s Title after WrestleMania is over. Her insertion into the WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal match might be a sign of where WWE wanted to put her in the first place though.
