It takes a lot of thinking to put on a good pro wrestling show and some fans might not see the strategy involved sometimes. It’s often disappointing to see your favorite Superstar in the first match because then you’re sitting there for the rest of the night knowing you’re not going to see them again, but it is by no means a bad thing to be in an opening match.
One fan tweeted at Cody Rhodes asking him to “set this man free” when referring to Finn Balor. The fan was trying to make a point that Balor opening up WWE house shows is a waste of his talent and a disgrace.
Cody responded saying: “Opening match is sometimes one of the more coveted spots on the card. Bunch of responsibility too…and for the biggest wrestling company in the world as well.” Not only did Rhodes put over Balor for having such an important role, but he also referred to WWE as the biggest wrestling company in the world, and rightfully so because they are.
So the next time you think about an event, consider that the opening match is far more important than some might think. It’s not a snub if anything it shows more confidence in talent to go out there and set to tone for the rest of the night and wake the fans up. Cody obviously realizes this and Finn Balor can certainly handle that kind of responsibility as well.

I love pro wrestling and hate BS. These two things drive me. Years of experience in writing, journalism, and digging exclusive insider info for Ringside News. Worked in finance before realizing pro wrestling journalism made much less sense. Pro beachballs at pro wrestling shows, pro dives if someone catches, anti bullies, olives, and pineapples on pizza.
