Zelina Vega is done working with a creative ceiling over her head.
Now that her WWE run is behind her, Vega says one of the biggest changes is simple: she can finally say what she wants, wrestle the way she wants and present herself without worrying about whether someone backstage thinks she is doing too much.
That includes promos. Vega explained while speaking to Ring the Belle that there were times in WWE when she could be given a microphone, but there were still limits on how far she was allowed to take things.
“I don’t have any more restrictions.”
Vega then got specific, claiming those restrictions could include being told not to outshine someone else, along with limits on her look and presentation.
“Like I don’t have a well you can you can get in there and have this promo but you can’t outshine this person or you can’t do this or you can’t wear that or you can’t have your wigs look this color.”
That frustration makes a lot more sense when you look at how much Vega has said she wanted to do during her final stretch in WWE. Her run as Women’s United States Champion gave her a singles spotlight, but she has already admitted she wanted more opportunities to actually defend the title and even hoped to take it outside WWE to places like AAA and Stardom.
Ringside News previously covered Vega’s title run after she defeated Chelsea Green to become Women’s United States Champion, a moment that finally gave her the singles championship she had been chasing. But even with the belt around her waist, Vega has made it clear that she still felt there were limits on what she was allowed to show. Now, those limits are gone.
“It’s literally freedom.”
Vega also said this next version of herself is not about erasing everything she did in WWE. She still considers Zelina part of who she is, but she wants fans to see a more authentic version without the same creative restrictions hanging over her.
That could mean harder-edged promos, different character choices, more freedom with her appearance and matches that allow her to show more than fans were used to seeing during her WWE run. After years of being told where the line was, Vega now sounds ready to see what happens when there isn’t one.
Zelina Vega spent years trying to prove she could do more than what WWE often gave her, and now she finally has the freedom to test that for herself. If her comments are any indication, fans may be about to see a much less filtered version of Vega than the one they watched on WWE television.
What do you think about Zelina Vega saying she was told not to outshine certain people in WWE? Do you think she will prove outside the company that WWE was holding her back? Let us know what you think in the comments.
