With Money in the Bank just around the corner, a new backstage report has provided an interesting update on who WWE is currently leaning toward to win this year’s ladder matches. While nothing is locked in until the show happens, creative has a handful of names at the top of the list.
Earlier this week, betting odds listed Bron Breakker and Roxanne Perez as the favorites to win their respective Money in the Bank matches. According to a new report, those names are still very much in the mix, but they aren’t the only ones under serious consideration.
According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, WWE’s current creative favorites are Bron Breakker and Penta in the men’s match, while Roxanne Perez and Lash Legend are viewed as the top candidates on the women’s side.
“WrestleVotes on Fightful Select is under the impression, from a source, that the current creative favorites heading into Money in the Bank are listed as follows: Men’s Money in the Bank: Penta and Bron Breakker are the top favorites. Women’s Money in the Bank: Roxanne Perez and Lash Legend are the top favorites.”
The report also notes that WWE explored a different direction at one point. According to the source, there was internal discussion about having Trick Williams win the men’s Money in the Bank ladder match before those plans changed.
“A source indicated to us that at one point, an idea for Trick Williams to win the men’s Money in the Bank Ladder match was floating around.”
Meanwhile, CM Punk and Kevin Owens aren’t expected to leave with the briefcase. WrestleVotes says that’s because WWE wants to keep the focus on the growing group of stars chasing Sami Zayn’s Undisputed WWE Championship on SmackDown.
“We’ve also learned that CM Punk and Kevin Owens are unlikely winners at this time, in an effort to keep the main story on SmackDown alive with the collection of six to eight different superstars gunning after Sami Zayn’s Undisputed WWE Title.”
That doesn’t necessarily mean the briefcase won’t become part of that title picture, though. According to the report, one source noted that adding the Money in the Bank contract into the mix could make the storyline even more interesting.
“A source did add that adding the Money in the Bank briefcase to the main event scene on SmackDown could juice up the storyline.”
Of course, WWE is known for changing plans, especially this close to a premium live event, so nothing should be considered official just yet. Still, if this report is accurate, it sounds like creative has already narrowed the field to a few frontrunners heading into Saturday night.
