Gunther had an unforgettable run as Intercontinental Champion, setting the record for the longest reign in WWE history. He later won the World Heavyweight Championship by defeating Damian Priest at SummerSlam, but many feel his booking has left a lot to be desired since then. In fact, WWE has now been criticized for dropping the ball on GUNTHER’s reign as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
During his reign, he has defended the title against top stars like Randy Orton, Sami Zayn, Damian Priest, and Jey Uso. While speaking on The Stevie Richards Show, Stevie Richards made it clear he is not impressed with how Triple H has booked The Ring General.
Richards believes GUNTHER has not been elevated to the same level as the WWE Champion and feels his momentum from the Intercontinental Championship reign has not carried over.
“They have not elevated Gunther. They haven’t done anything with Gunther. Think about it, he was for a while with that Intercontinental Title belt, really over with that. At the beginning of the world title reign, you hoped it would be something where he would be that champion to be on the level of the WWE one, I don’t think that he is.”
As for GUNTHER’s current direction, Jey Uso has already made it clear he will be challenging The Ring General for the WWE World Heavyweight Champion at WrestleMania 41 following his Royal Rumble win.
We will have to wait and see if WWE improves Gunther’s booking and raises the prestige of the World Heavyweight Championship. Fans feel his current reign hasn’t lived up to his time as Intercontinental Champion, and many hope he will be presented as just as dominant soon enough.
