The long‑rumored father‑versus‑son showdown between Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio is officially off the Survivor Series: WarGames card—and the change comes straight from backstage sources.
Dave Meltzer broke the news on Wrestling Observer Radio, revealing that WWE is no longer planning to run the match in San Diego despite storyline groundwork. Meltzer explained that after digging for confirmation, he was told WWE has pulled the match completely.
“Rey and Dominik are not wrestling in San Diego, so I did find that out too,” Meltzer said. “I don’t know what that means. I don’t know if that means Cena and Dom is still on or they’re going in a different direction to where they were going, because the Cena and Dom title change was going to be in San Diego originally, not in Boston.”
The match was internally penciled in for Petco Park—a hometown performance with a built‑in emotional hook. There was even talk of Rey defending the AAA Mega Championship against Dominik that same weekend. Now, both versions appear to have been pushed aside as WWE reshuffles its plans.
The turning point seems to be John Cena’s sudden Intercontinental Championship match on RAW. Originally meant for Survivor Series, the match was moved up to Boston, where Cena beat Dominik and became a Grand Slam Champion. With Dominik no longer holding the title, the entire direction shifted—and the father‑son match lost its momentum.
Survivor Series now pivots fully to its WarGames attractions. CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, and Jey Uso are locked in for the men’s WarGames match alongside two mystery partners–while Logan Paul joins The Vision on the opposing side. Rey and Dominik are still advertised to appear at the event, but not against each other.
This change leaves fans wondering what role the Mysterios will actually play in their hometown—and whether WWE missed a massive opportunity by pulling the match.
