WWE Initially Planned to Keep Enzo Amore Away From Big Cass After Their Returns

WWE apparently had no interest in simply hitting rewind on Enzo Amore and Big Cass when both names started coming up for possible returns. The original idea was actually to keep them apart because WWE believed putting Cass back into a tag team with Enzo could put a ceiling on what he might become as a singles star.

Dave Meltzer broke down those plans on Tuesday’s Wrestling Observer Radio while discussing Cass wrecking Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee during Monday’s RAW. Meltzer said Enzo’s return had been discussed as something close to a done deal, but pairing him with Cass was not part of the plan because WWE saw more upside in Cass on his own.

“There was talk of Enzo in NXT. It was talked to me like it was pretty much a done deal, but they were gonna keep Enzo and Cass apart because of the idea that if they put them together, Cass’s upside is very limited in that tag team based on how WWE does tag teams.”

The funny part is that Cass’ current booking may have changed that conversation. Ringside News previously covered how WWE may have already cooled on Big Cass as a singles act after he lost to Dragon Lee on the September 28 episode of RAW. Meltzer admitted that if Cass isn’t being positioned as a major solo star anymore, putting him back with Enzo suddenly doesn’t sound so crazy.

“But now, with Cass in the spot that he’s in, being with Enzo may not be the worst thing in a tag team. So I suppose they could do that. Seems kind of weird. What does Cass need Enzo for when he’s beating these guys up all by himself anyway?”

Cass certainly looked like he didn’t need much help on Monday. He interfered in Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee’s match against Dominik Mysterio and JD McDonagh, then flattened both Rey and Lee with big boots before standing tall. That came after Cass lost to Dragon Lee on the September 28 RAW, another result that raised questions about where WWE actually sees him fitting into the pecking order.

Cass returned to WWE on the August 24 episode of RAW with a win over Je’Von Evans, but the road since then has been a lot less straightforward. WWE initially looked like it was rebuilding him as a monster singles act, but if that plan has cooled off, the door for an Enzo reunion suddenly looks a lot wider than it did when both men were first being discussed.

The wild part is WWE apparently went into this wanting absolutely nothing to do with recreating Enzo and Cass because the company saw bigger things for Cass by himself. A few weeks of booking later, and that old tag team might not look like such a bad fallback after all.

Do you think WWE should reunite Enzo Amore and Big Cass, or should Cass stay on his own and keep chasing a singles run? Leave your feedback in the comments.
