WWE may be getting ready to strengthen its connection with the NWA, and Kerry Morton says the company is already keeping a close eye on the promotion’s roster.
During a conversation with Hitting The Turnbuckle, Morton was discussing Natalya’s upcoming appearance at NWA 78 against the Paige Sisters. After praising Natalya’s career, Morton shifted gears and teased what he described as possible breaking news involving WWE and the NWA.
Morton said WWE and the NWA have developed a positive relationship behind the scenes, adding that he has personally had brief conversations with people from WWE.
“It’s pretty cool, but it’s nice to have a good relationship with WWE. Billy has mentioned it before, and it’s true. I’ve had small-talk conversations with them, and it’s great to have that good relationship.”
Morton then dropped the biggest part of his comments. According to the former NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion, WWE is actively watching several wrestlers and considering sending more of its own talent to the NWA.
“They are actively looking at a lot of talent, and they’re looking at proceeding with sending more talent to the National Wrestling Alliance.”
That would be a major move for the NWA. Natalya’s match at NWA 78 already shows that WWE is willing to let an established name work with the promotion, but Morton’s comments suggest the door may be open for much more than a one-time appearance. Morton believes WWE’s interest is also a sign that the NWA is earning respect for its talent, presentation and approach to professional wrestling.
“So, with that being said, that’s always cool to hear and always a great thing to know that our business is that successful with someone such as WWE, in terms of success, where our character is, where we value things and where they value things.”
Of course, Morton is not planning to welcome any visiting WWE wrestlers with a handshake and a fruit basket. He immediately turned the potential partnership into a challenge and promised to put anyone WWE sends over flat on their back.
“That’s a cool relationship that’s going to be happening, and I’m looking forward to that evolving. I’m looking forward to beating all the guys that can kiss my ass in WWE that come over here to the NWA. They’ll look good when their back is on the mat for the count of three while I’m on top with my hand raised. So, that’s going to be a great time. Truly, it’s going to be a good time.”
Morton did not name the wrestlers WWE is evaluating or reveal who could be sent to the NWA next. Still, his comments make it clear that the relationship may extend beyond Natalya’s NWA 78 appearance. More WWE talent showing up would give the NWA fresh matchups while allowing WWE to take a closer look at wrestlers who could fit its future plans.
