Roman Reigns vs. Penta may not have been a one-and-done after all. WWE originally viewed their World Heavyweight Championship match in Mexico City as a single encounter, but the reaction coming out of the match has apparently forced creative to rethink that idea.
Joey Votes revealed on WrestleVotes Radio that people within WWE creative have started discussing another match between Reigns and Penta. According to Joey, the shift happened after WWE saw the response to their September 14 RAW showdown.
“According to a source within Creative, some future plans may have been rearranged following the incredible feedback coming out of the Mexico City Raw. While it was relayed to us that at the time of the Roman Reigns-Penta matchup, many within Creative viewed it as a one and done. According to those with knowledge of the situation, that may have changed over the last week.”
That change appears to go beyond people simply liking the match. Joey said several people inside WWE now believe running Reigns vs. Penta again makes sense from both a creative and business standpoint.
“We’re told several within the company now believe a rematch between Penta and Roman Reigns makes sense both from a business and creative standpoint.”
Ringside News previously covered WWE’s strong internal reaction to Penta’s performance against Roman Reigns. The match gave Penta one of the biggest singles opportunities of his WWE run, and the reaction that followed appears to have done more for him than simply producing a memorable night in Mexico City. TC said WWE was especially impressed with what Penta delivered once the bell rang. He made it clear that Penta’s showing against Reigns opened some eyes.
“Oh I’d love to see it again. Absolutely. I think they were very much blown away with what they saw in the ring from Penta. Not a surprise given his track record as a professional wrestler over the course of his career. Someone who can go bell to bell with almost anybody. Roman and him had a fantastic match, maybe the match of the year.”
That creates an interesting situation for WWE because Penta didn’t win the championship the first time around. Ringside News also covered why WWE kept the World Heavyweight Championship on Roman Reigns in Mexico City, but the door now appears to be open for WWE to revisit the match.
Penta went into Mexico City as a challenger getting the biggest opportunity of his WWE career, and he came out of it with people behind the scenes discussing how quickly they can get him back in the ring with Roman Reigns. That’s a pretty serious jump in position for somebody whose first match with Reigns was originally supposed to be the end of the story.
