WWE didn’t just make roster cuts — they were actively trying to slash payroll across the board, and talent were put in a tough spot because of it.

A new update from Fightful Select reveals that the company had a clear financial target and moved aggressively to hit it. After multiple releases and contract changes, the reasoning behind it all became clear.

“WWE was tasked with shedding ‘millions’ in payroll over the last month or so, and cuts were made in order to make that a reality.”

That directive led to a wave of criticism within the industry, especially considering what was happening at the executive level at the same time.

“This was met with heavy criticism within the industry, as the pay packages for TKO executives were revealed at the same time as record-high stocks.”

But the most shocking part wasn’t just the cuts — it was how deep they went into existing deals.

“…asking talent to take a paycut of seven figures per year in many cases was heavily criticized and scoffed at.”

This wasn’t just trimming contracts. In some cases, talent were being asked to take major financial hits just to stay employed. With WWE continuing to restructure under TKO Group Holdings, it’s becoming clear that financial efficiency is taking priority — even if it means pushing talent into difficult decisions.

Do you think WWE is making the right move by cutting payroll this aggressively, or is this going to hurt the locker room long-term? Drop your thoughts below.
